Blogging Tips and Tricks-Part 1 Customizing Your Blog

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

Although I have only been regularly blogging for just over a year, I've learned SO MUCH in that short time.  I decided to put together a quick post of some tips and tricks I've learned as a newbie blogger, but as I began writing it, I realized there are a BUNCH of things I can share!  So, I decided to make it a short series of posts!
Today's post will be all about customizing your blog.  There are a zillion different ways to customize and make your blog your own, so I just chose the ones that have been the most useful to me!

Customize Your Layout
Blogger offers a ton of different layouts that are easy to customize.  But if you're like me, and you want a little more pizzaz on your blog, a third party is a good way to go.  You can find tons of free blog templates by searching on Pinterest.
But if you're looking to invest in something a little more personalized, I'd recommend Designer Blogs.  They offer a little bit of everything as far as free layouts, and premade blog themes (like the one I have!) The premade blog themes start at 15$ and they offer fully customizable blog designs as well.
Unfortunately the expression "don't judge a book by its cover" doesn't always apply to blogging, so making your blog look fabulous and easy to navigate is worth the investment.

Layouts are cheaper the simpler they are, so here are some ways you can fancy up your blog all by yourself!!!

Add Social Media Buttons to your blog--the EASY WAY!!!
Lots of websites install custom Social Media buttons that you have to pay for, but adding these buttons are SO SIMPLE you can do it yourself, for free!
There are a bunch of different tutorials on how to make blogger buttons using HTML code, but this way is much easier!  There's no coding necessary and this video breaks it down and is easy to understand!

Here's where I got my Social Media Icons!  Craftiments offers a bunch of different colors and they're SO easy to use!! If you're looking for something more specific, try searching Social Media Icons on Pinterest, there are free options and a lot of affordable downloads on Etsy! You can use Pic Monkey to change the pixel sizes to better fit your sidebar!

Add a Pin It button to your photos automatically

Code It Pretty has a bunch of different tutorials for customizing your blog!  Go here to learn how to add the Pin It button to your pictures!  One of the best ways to get traffic to your blog is through Pinterest.  If you've got the pin it button, people can easily find your blog again!

Add an automatic signature to the end of your post

You can create your own signature using Pic Monkey (this site is also great for adding text, cropping photos, resizing, and basic editing!)
Creating a signature is simple!  (You can also use steps 1-6 to create your blog title!)

1. On the Pic Monkey main page, choose "design"
2. Add some text! (you can also add 'stickers')
3. Crop photo close to the edges of your signature
4. Under the "Canvas Color" tab, choose Transparent Canvas
5. Resize the photo to better fit your blog post body (mine is 200x47)
6. Save your fabulous new signature
7. Check out THIS tutorial to add the signature permanently!
(Code It Pretty explains this part MUCH better than I could!)

I hope this post has been helpful to you and that you've learned a little something!  I will be adding more tips in the future, so keep an eye out!  If you have any questions on the process of anything listed in this post, feel free to leave me a comment!
