How To: Chevron Crochet

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Hello There!

I have never done a "How To" before, so here goes nothin'!! :)

I recently started making a chevron crochet blanket! I got a lot of compliments, so I thought I would show my pattern for it!

After struggling to follow a couple of other patterns and video tutorials, I figured it out on my own, here's how!

To make your blanket, you will need:

2 (or more!) colors of yarn, and a size H/8 crochet hook.

With your first color, chain stitch how wide you want your blanket. You need to work in multiples of 49 then on your last round of 49, add one more!  When I made my blanket, I did 49 chain stitches over and over until I reached the width I wanted and then added one more stitch! The reason being is because you will skip a stitch when you get to the end of the pattern!

Once your blanket is as wide as you want it, (Remember to count in multiples of 49 plus one at the end or you will end up with an unfinished "chevron" at the end of your blanket!), skip the stitch closest to your crochet hook, and single crochet the next 11 stitches.

Then single crochet 3 times in the 12th stitch. This will create the upward point of your chevron.

After you single crochet 3 times in the 12th stitch, continue a single crochet in the next 11 stitches. This will get you to the end of your first "chevron".

To create the downward point of your chevron, skip the next two stitches and single crochet 11 more stitches.

Repeat those steps until you get to the very last 2 stitches in your chain.
At this point, you will skip one chain stitch, single crochet into the last stitch.

To move to your next row, make one chain stitch, and turn your work around.

Repeat this pattern for 10 rows of your first color.

Change colors (follow this How To!) and repeat until you reach your desired length! Then you will have a beautiful chevron blanket!

I hope this all made sense! If you have any questions, write them in the comments!

Here's a condensed version of the pattern:

Crochet width of blanket, working in multiples of 49 plus one extra at the end.
Skip the first stitch, and single crochet the next 11 stitches.
3 single crochets into the 12th stitch. (upward point)
Single crochet the next 11 stitches.
Skip 2 stitches and single crochet the next 11 stitches. (downward point)
Repeat until the last 2 stitches of your chain.
Skip 1 stitch, single crochet the last stitch, add one chain stitch.
Repeat for 10 rows with each color.

******IMPORTANT!  If you get to the end of your first row, and you find that you don't have 11 stitches left, you probably miss counted along the way. No big deal! Just finish the stitches you have, skipping one (if you only have 8 stitches at the end, stitch the 7th stitch and single crochet the 8th and chain one). It won't be too noticeable, your last chevron will just be slightly shorter than the others, but you can hardly tell! (I'm speaking from experience, some of my blankets have been an exact 11 stitches at the end, others I've had only 7 or 8! Like I said, not the end of the world!)

Loves,

Tayler
